About Breaking the Taboo Two

The Breaking the Taboo Two-project builds on the previous project “Breaking the Taboo” – that showed that many health and social service providers do not have clear organisational procedures dealing with abuse against older women and that many staff members do not have experience in this field. Hence, organisations working with older people need to develop standards, procedures and staff members as peer advisors who are trained with respect to these issues. Also, a need for training staff members in this field was identified. It was also recommended to strengthen cooperation and networks between victim protection organisations and community health and care organisations. The project was carried out within the Daphne III programme by the European Commission and ran from December 2009 – December 2011. It was coordinated by the Austrian Red Cross.

Aims

The aims of the Breaking the Taboo Two-project were to:

  • Enable senior staff and/or trainers to carry out awareness raising workshops on “violence against older women within the family – recognizing and acting” with staff who work in older people’s own homes (e.g. nurses, nursing assistants, home helpers, social workers).
  • Train staff members to act as peer advisors within community health and social service organisations.
  • Develop and suggest a module on violence against older women within the family for inclusion in basic vocational training of staff who work in older people’s own homes.

Target groups

  • Target groups are on the one hand professionals in the area of community health and social service organisations but on the other hand also
  • professionals in the area of victim protection organisations and teachers at vocational training institutes and universities.
