Tools for Raising Awareness

“The maltreatments against older people are many, with different kinds of manifestations. We need to develop a certain type of sensitivity towards this phenomenon.” (Manager, Italy)

In the last few years increasing attention has been paid to domestic violence against women and children in many European countries. Nevertheless, the issue of abuse against older people and older women in particular has not been addressed to the same extent. There is still a lack of awareness of this issue among the public and also a lack of provisions for older women who are victims of violence and abuse in most European countries.

The project Breaking the Taboo developed therefore several awareness raising activities and material for health and social service professionals in order to address violence against older women in the family and to be able to deal adequately with this issue.
